What requirements apply to textiles and clothing placed on the European market?
Textile products intended for the end consumer, such as clothing, home textiles, and textile accessories (scarves, hats, bandanas, etc.), must comply with both the consumer information requirements set forth in Regulation (EU) No. 1007/2011, regarding labeling and fiber composition, and the safety requirements set forth in Regulation (EU) No. 2023/988 on general product safety (GPSR).
In the laboratory, we verify the correct composition of the textile fibers and the accuracy of the labeling, as well as the safety of the finished product, ensuring that, under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use, it poses no risk to the health and safety of the consumer.
When are laboratory tests required for textiles and clothing?
Laboratory testing is necessary to verify that materials and finished products comply with regulatory requirements, such as REACH and GPSR, and with market requirements, such as RSLs and PRSLs defined by brands, distributors, or international groups.
How is compliance managed throughout the supply chain?
Ensuring the compliance of textile and apparel products requires coordinated management of technical information throughout the supply chain, from materials and components to the finished product.
Data on materials, testing, and verification must be traceable and consistent to support the product’s safety declaration and respond to market audits or requests. A structured management approach promotes market continuity and effective communication among suppliers, brands, and distributors.
Are textiles and clothing subject to specific requirements regarding chemicals?
Yes. Textile and apparel products may be subject to restrictions on chemical content under European legislation, specifically the REACH Regulation.
In addition to the European requirements, the following may also apply:
- Voluntary restrictions defined by RSL, PRSL, MRSL, or programs such as ZDHC;
- Non-EU requirements, with additional restrictions or conditions for market access.
These instruments often set more stringent criteria than European regulations and are essential for accessing various markets.
Laboratory testing verifies compliance with applicable requirements as well as voluntary or market-specific requirements, contributing to product safety and international acceptance.
